Cortesía de la NASA) Durante la exploración del Universo, los científicos de la NASA tienen la necesidad de crear nuevos materiales y productos que permitan a los equipos electrónicos y a los humanos en el espacio hacer frente a los retos ambientales para sobrevivir, en condiciones donde la vida que conocemos es imposible de reproducir.

Mientras tanto, esas mismas invenciones se aplican en la parafernalia en nuestro día a día, en este caso estos son los implementos de seguridad que disfrutamos gracias a los equipos de científicos de la NASA.
NASA’s Breathing System
Uno de los riesgos más peligrosos en el trabajo heroico de los bomberos es la falta de oxígeno y el alto riesgo de asfixia durante los rescates de vidas. Cuando la NASA creo un SISTEMA DE RESPIRACIÓN fue precisamente porque por mas peligroso que puede ser el trabajo de los bomberos en la lista de riesgos profesionales sin duda el de mayor riesgo es el de los astronautas que tienen que realizar funciones mecánicas en el espacio donde el oxígeno no está presente y por lo tanto es imposible sobrevivir sin el invisible pero valiosísimo y precioso elemento.

EL SISTEMA DE RESPIRACIÓN se origina con el PROGRAMA APOLLO el primero que utiliza mascaras con materiales compuestos de aluminio para hacer el dispositivo más ligero y más fácil de poner y quitar; esta estructura permite ahorrar tiempo y peso, gracias a su uso se han reducido el número de lesiones por inhalación de humo, lo que permite que los seres humanos puedan respirar donde el oxígeno está presente en cantidades mínimas asegurando un alto porcentaje de sobrevivencia.

Del mismo modo los ingenieros de la NASA han contribuido a desarrollar el primer RADIO intercomunicador, esencial para la coordinación en la distribución de las mangueras y el rescate de las víctimas. El RADIO de corto alcance y de dos vías opera con un circuito electrónico desarrollado originalmente para las comunicaciones entre los globos meteorológicos de la NASA. Al final, este RADIO se convierte en el dispositivo más importante en el equipo de comunicaciones modernas entre rescatistas, por ser un elemento factible de comunicación que permite la supervivencia al entrar en edificios en llamas. Actualmente estos RADIOS continúan evolucionando en sus componentes para asegurar su alcance y que sus materiales no se deterioren en temperaturas extremas y mantener a los bomberos comunicados en condiciones de alto riesgo y temperaturas extremas.

Otra herramienta muy útil para el trabajo de los rescatistas es el RECEPTOR DE LLAMAS INVISIBLES, una cámara de mano para detectar llamas invisibles de hidrógeno y alcohol, este dispositivo fue desarrollado en el CENTRO ESPACIAL STENNIS, durante su programa de pruebas para cohetes, donde se utiliza
hidrógeno líquido. Y ahora, los bomberos pueden utilizar el RECEPTOR DE IMAGEN DE LLAMA INVISIBLE en el proceso de una intervención dentro de un incendio para evitar los lugares más peligrosos en el proceso de salvar vidas.

Continuando con las contribuciones de la NASA en cuanto a la seguridad con los bomberos esta el TRAJE PARA LOS INCENDIOS. Los uniformes de los bomberos, que visten dentro de la estación están hechos de algodón, suelen ser pantalones de sarga de algodón y camisas de algodón porque cuando salen a mitigar los incendios, pueden colocarse el equipo de protección encima sobre la ropa de algodón que no se derrite en la piel como otras telas.

El uniforme exterior se conoce como “Equipo Bunker” y “Equipo Turnout ” y se diferencian, según el contexto. El “Bunker” se usa en casos de rescate sin fuego, colocándose los pantalones, las botas y la chaqueta; y en el caso de incendio se usa el “Equipo de Turnout” que es la combinación completa de todos los elementos de resguardo individual. La ropa de protección personal de los bomberos esta configurado de un material conocido como el “Gold PBI” que es un producto textil especial llamado “polibenzimidazol” entrelazado en el tejido con Kevlar.

El tejido PBI es único, ya que es completamente resistente al fuego imposible de quemar ó derretir, aunque se le vierta gasolina encima y se le prendan fuego. Este atuendo en contra de incendios es ligero, resistente al fuego, con características resistentes al calor.

Estos extraordinarios materiales fueron desarrollados originalmente para
los trajes espaciales de los astronautas dentro del programa espacial de la NASA “APOLLO” esos trajes ha ido evolucionando en cada una de las misiones para proteger a los astronautas de las radiaciones solares durante los viajes a la Luna.
Recubrimiento de ESMALTE ANTIINFLAMABLE en los tanques de oxigeno. También conocidos como el Scott Air-Pak, que los bomberos cargan durante las misiones de rescate varían en tamaño y capacidad. Los de 10-14 lbs con 30 minutos de aire están hechos de fibra de carbono.

Los de 60 minutos de aire puede llegar a pesar hasta 17 libras y a partir de esa capacidad los tanques están hechos de aluminio y el más grande llega hasta 22 lbs; todos están protegidos con recubrimiento inflamable del mismo esmalte que cubre las naves espaciales de la NASA, el ESMALTE ANTIINFLAMABE se aplica todos los tanques de oxígeno y en los cascos de barcos como un recubrimiento en contra del fuego evitando la propagación de las llamas, es un material tan resistente que se aplica lo mismo como una cinta para envolver y aislar las líneas de combustible del fuego.

Otro producto excepcional y resultado de las investigaciones de los científicos de la NASA es el REVESTIMIENTO DE PROTECCION Y AISLAMIENTO una estructura compuesta para inhibir la corrosión en los oleoductos en los tanques de oxígeno de los Bomberos, esté REVESTIMIENTO DE PROTECCIÓN Y AISLAMIENTO, es el mismo modelo de cerámica, utilizada en los mosaicos que componen la parte exterior de los vehículos-espaciales de la NASA durante el programa del transbordador espacial, STS y que también protege las plataformas petroleras de los incendios en alta mar durante los ensambles.

EL REVESTIMIENTO DE PROTECCION Y AISLAMIENTO puede soportar temperaturas de 2.000 grados Fahrenheit. Ese blindaje permite que los bomberos puedan ejercitar sus funciones de rescate en ambientes de temperaturas extremas.

And now, firefighters can use the INVISIBLE FLAME IMAGING in the process of intervention to find invisible flame within a fire and to avoid the most dangerous places in the process of rescue lives.

Continuing with contributions from NASA about fire safety, are the FIRE ATTIRE. Firemen’s uniforms, they wear inside the station are made of cotton, usually cotton twill pants and cotton shirts because when they go to mitigate the fire, they can placed the outer uniform on top of the cotton clothing that will not melt in
the skin like other fabrics.

The outer uniforms are known as “Bunker gear” and “Turnout gear” they differ, depending on context. The “Bunker” is used in cases without fire rescue, putting pants, boots and jacket, and in the case of fire use the “Turnout “which is the complete combination of all elements. The protective clothing for firefighters is configured from a material known as the “PBI Gold” a fabric which is a special textile product called “Polybenzimidazole” woven into the fabric with Kevlar.

PBI fabric is unique because it is completely fireproof impossible to burn or melt, even if you pour petrol on it and set fire. This
outfit anti-fire is lightweight, with heat-resistant features.

Another outstanding product and results of investigations of NASA scientists is the PROTECTIVE JACKETING-INSULATION, a composite structure to inhibit corrosion of the pipelines in the oxygen tanks of Fight fires, this PROTECTIVE JACKETING-INSULATION is the same ceramic cloth, used on the tiles that make up the space shuttle’s outer skin in all space-vehicles used during the NASA space shuttle program, protects offshore oil platforms from fires that can cause the platforms to buckle.
